How to Protect Your Lawn From the Summer Heat

Some of you may have noticed—it’s hot outside. Luckily, you can easily avoid the heat by simply heading inside and cranking up the AC. Unfortunately for your yard, this is not the case and you may have already noticed brown patches starting to appear on your once lovely and lush lawn. A great sprinkler system can help keep your yard looking green and healthy but we’ll provide you with some other tips on what you can do to ensure your lawn is protected from the scorching summer heat.

Keep Grass a Little Longer

When you keep your grass maintained a little bit higher than you would in the cooler months, the roots will extend deeper into the earth and helps to prevent weeds from popping up. Weeds compete with grass for water and not having them in the first place will keep you grass healthier. We recommend talking with your TaskEasy contractor to adjust the blade height to about 4 inches during summer months.

Keep Mower Blades Sharp

Grass that isn’t cut with sharp blades will start to fray and should be avoided because this makes it more prone to browning. Instead of worrying about whether your blades are sharp enough, why not let one of TaskEasy’s trusted contractors mow your lawn for you? It’s their job to make sure your lawn looks great and this means they’ll have the tools to keep their blades sharp and ready to go.

Don’t Bag, Mulch Instead

We’ve talked about this before but mulching is really where it’s at when it comes to keeping your lawn happy. Mulched grass will actually help to trap moisture in and helps keep your lawn at a cooler temperature while hydrating it. This is why we think you should reconsider next time you go to bag your lawn clippings.

Water in the Morning

It’s smart to water in the morning when it’s hot out because less water will be lost to evaporation from the sunlight. By watering your lawn in the morning, you’re also giving it more time to fully dry before nightfall. Half an inch, twice a week should keep your lawn nice and hydrated.

Limit Walking on Your Lawn

Sure, you probably can’t completely avoid walking on your lawn but you can limit it. Grass in the summer tends to be dryer and walking on it can beat down the grass and lead to long term damage. Heavy foot traffic can also lead to packed in soil which prevents air from getting down to the grass roots.

Use Protective Covers

This is only a temporary solution but you can purchase a shade cloth from your local home and garden store for a quick fix. These usually come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can block sunlight by up to 90% depending on the one you purchase. Just make sure not to completely enclose any plants or leave the cloth somewhere that is vulnerable to wind.

Plant Some Trees

If you’re looking for a permanent solution, consider planting some trees in your yard. They may not grow overnight but they will provide shade for years to come. Trees have many benefits including: improving air quality, increasing property value, and creating a relaxing environment for your home. It will require a little bit of patience but the payout is well worth it.

We hope these tips help you take better care of your lawn this summer. If you ever have questions on how to properly care for your lawn in the summer or if you just need someone to take care of your lawn for you, affordable lawn care is just a few clicks away!
