Hiring Contractors Without Proper Credentials Poses Significant Risks to Homeowners
Company’s patent-pending algorithms establish a fair-market price in more than 400 U.S. metropolitan areas for services such as lawn care, snow removal or holiday lighting installation. Instead of price haggling, the customer and contractor focus on quality and fairness.
Hiring TaskEasy's licensed and insured contractors to mow lawns or remove snow protects property managers and homeowners in case an injury occurs on the job.
SALT LAKE CITY - August 29, 2014- Homeowners or property managers who are tired of doing their own lawn mowing or snow clearing - or who are unable to perform those tasks due to age, health, work demands or simply because of a vacation - are faced with the conundrum of finding a contractor who can be trusted to do a quality job for a fair price.
According to TaskEasy, a start-up technology company that facilitates ordering home exterior services online, it's also important to select contractors who are not only licensed and insured, but who are also pre-screened.
"For the homeowner's protection and peace of mind, it's important to do your research before you hire a contractor," said TaskEasy CTO Joe Turner. "If something does go wrong, or if the contractor gets injured on your property, you can be held liable."
Many homeowners know contractor credentials are important, but few fully understand the differences and the specific protections each offer.
Most states or localities require businesses to be licensed to do any type of skilled labor on another person's home or property. There are multiple licenses a contractor must receive to be considered a fully licensed contractor. Most contractors must also be licensed with the city and state for tax purposes. If a contractor is not trade-licensed, he or she may not be able to be insured.
Homeowners should ask the contractor for certificates of insurance and check to make sure the policies are not expired. The two most common types are liability insurance and workers' compensation. Liability insurance protects homeowners from contractor-caused damage to your property. Workers' compensation covers injured workers for lost wages and medical services, regardless of who was at fault. If an uninsured contractor is injured on your property, you can be held liable.
TaskEasy, which launched nationwide in April 2013, has already performed more than 50,000 lawn mowings and other tasks like snow clearing and holiday lighting installation. The company attributes its success to carefully pre-screening all contractors, making it easy to order home exterior services online in just a few clicks, and offering homeowners a guarantee. TaskEasy contractors are not paid until the homeowner approves of the work performed.
"Making sure a contractor has all the right credentials is a lot of work. On top of it all, you still have to trust them to not only do quality work, but to also simply show up," said Turner. "We knew there was a need out there to make finding a reliable, reputable professional to cut your grass or remove snow from your driveway at a fair market price as easy as ordering a product on Amazon."
